Shows That Were Renewed — Then Un-Renewed
Getting cancelled is painful enough. Getting renewed, then un-renewed before you can start production? That's a whole new level of television heartbreak.
In the streaming era, a new pattern has emerged: shows that are publicly renewed by their networks, announced in press releases and celebrated by fans — only to be quietly un-renewed weeks or months later. Sometimes it's due to corporate restructuring. Sometimes it's a change in leadership. Sometimes the numbers just don't add up by the time the new season is ready to go.
Whatever the reason, "renewed then un-renewed" is now a recognised TV tragedy. Here are the most notable examples.
Dexter: Original Sin (Paramount+ / Showtime, 2024–2025)
Perhaps the most high-profile case. On April 1, 2025, Deadline Hollywood reported that Dexter: Original Sin had been renewed for a second season. Fans celebrated. The cast said they'd love to return. Showrunner Clyde Phillips was overseeing both Original Sin and the upcoming Resurrection series.
On August 22, 2025 — four months later — Variety broke the news: the renewal was reversed. The show was cancelled, no second season would be produced. No official explanation was given, but the cancellation came amid broader restructuring at Showtime as it merged further into the Paramount+ ecosystem.
The show was Showtime's most-streamed premiere ever. It didn't matter. The renewal was revoked.
The Peripheral (Amazon Prime Video, 2022)
A sci-fi thriller from the minds of Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy (Westworld), starring Chloë Grace Moretz. Amazon renewed it for Season 2 in early 2023. Then, later that year, Amazon reversed course and cancelled the show entirely — reportedly due to the writers' and actors' strikes causing production delays and cost overruns. The second season was never made.
Minx (HBO Max / Starz, 2022–2024)
Minx was renewed for Season 2 at HBO Max in May 2022. Then HBO Max underwent a massive content restructuring under new leadership. The renewal was rescinded. Starz picked up the show for a second season — and then, after it aired, cancelled it again. A show that was renewed twice and cancelled twice.
The Society (Netflix, 2019)
A group of teenagers must build a new society when all the adults in their wealthy town mysteriously vanish. Netflix renewed it for a second season in early 2020. The writers' room was assembled. Scripts were being developed. Then COVID hit. On August 21, 2020, Netflix reversed the renewal, citing production complications caused by the pandemic. The show was cancelled. The scripts exist. The story will never be told.
The Rise of "Un-Renewal"
This pattern is becoming more common as streaming services tighten budgets and restructure leadership. A renewal announcement generates positive press and keeps talent happy. But by the time the writers' room is assembled and production costs are calculated, the financial reality can shift. The result: shows that were publicly celebrated as successes become quietly cancelled, leaving casts, crews, and audiences in limbo.
