The Defenders Saga: Why All 6 Marvel Netflix Shows Were Cancelled
Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Punisher, and The Defenders — the entire Marvel Netflix universe was systematically cancelled within 18 months. Here's the full story.
Between 2015 and 2019, Netflix and Marvel produced one of the most ambitious television experiments in history: a shared universe of interconnected superhero shows, each building toward a crossover event. At its peak, the "Defenders Saga" included six series and 163 episodes of television.
Then, within 18 months, every single show was cancelled. Here's why.
The Shows
Daredevil (3 Seasons, 2015–2018)
The crown jewel of the Defenders Saga. Charlie Cox starred as Matt Murdock, a blind lawyer who fights crime as the vigilante Daredevil. Two lauded seasons built a rich world of ninjas, conspiracies, and moral complexity. The third season — widely considered the best — was a tense psychological thriller. And then... cancelled. The fan campaign to save Daredevil was one of the most passionate in television history — and it eventually worked, with the show being revived on Disney+ as Daredevil: Born Again.
Jessica Jones (3 Seasons, 2015–2019)
Krysten Ritter starred as a private investigator with super strength and PTSD. The first season, featuring David Tennant as the terrifying Kilgrave, was a cultural phenomenon. Later seasons explored Jessica's complicated family history and her fragile relationships. Netflix cancelled it after three seasons.
Luke Cage (2 Seasons, 2016–2018)
Mike Colter starred as the unbreakable Luke Cage, a superhero defending Harlem from organised crime. The first season was acclaimed for its exploration of Black identity and community. The second season deepened the world and ended on a major cliffhanger — Luke becoming the new crime lord of Harlem. Cancelled before Season 3 could explore that transformation.
Iron Fist (2 Seasons, 2017–2018)
The most critically divisive show in the saga. Finn Jones starred as Danny Rand, a billionaire who returns to New York after being presumed dead for 15 years, claiming the power of the Iron Fist. The second season was a marked improvement, ending on a tease of Danny passing the mantle to Colleen Wing. Cancelled anyway.
The Defenders (Limited Series, 2017)
The crossover event — eight episodes bringing together Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist against a common enemy. While entertaining, it was widely seen as a missed opportunity. The limited series format meant it was always intended to be finite.
The Punisher (2 Seasons, 2017–2019)
Jon Bernthal's Frank Castle was introduced in Daredevil Season 2 and quickly became a fan favourite. His spin-off series explored the psychology of a vigilante who kills without remorse. Two seasons of brutal, thoughtful action. Cancelled alongside the rest of the saga.
Why Were They Cancelled?
The official reason: Disney was preparing to launch Disney+, which would become the exclusive home for Marvel television. The Netflix shows were created under a deal signed before Disney+ existed. When that deal expired, Disney had no incentive to continue — they wanted their characters on their own platform.
The cancellation of the Defenders Saga was a business decision disguised as a creative one. The shows were popular, critically acclaimed, and had passionate fanbases. But they were produced by a competitor — and Disney needed its superheroes back.
The Revival
In a remarkable turn, many of the Defenders Saga characters have been revived on Disney+. Daredevil: Born Again debuted in 2025, with Charlie Cox and Vincent D'Onofrio reprising their roles. Jon Bernthal's Punisher returned in a special presentation. And rumours persist of a Jessica Jones revival. The Defenders Saga may have ended — but the characters live on.
