The Expanse: Complete Story and Character Guide
One of the greatest sci-fi series ever made — six seasons of political intrigue, alien technology, and humanity's struggle for survival across the solar system.
The Expanse premiered on Syfy on December 14, 2015, and ran for three seasons before being cancelled. An unprecedented fan campaign — #SaveTheExpanse — convinced Amazon Prime Video to pick up the series for three more seasons. The series concluded on January 14, 2022, with 62 episodes across six seasons.
Based on the novels by James S.A. Corey (the pen name of Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck), The Expanse is set in a future where humanity has colonised the solar system. Earth, Mars, and the Belt are locked in a tense political struggle — until the discovery of the protomolecule, an alien bio-weapon that changes everything. According to Variety, The Expanse is widely regarded as one of the most scientifically accurate sci-fi series ever produced, with the show's creators consulting astrophysicists to ensure that the depiction of space travel, gravity, and the physics of the solar system was as realistic as possible. That commitment to realism made the show's supernatural elements — the protomolecule, the Ring — all the more striking when they appeared.
Full Season Recaps
Season 1 (2015–2016)
The ice-hauler Canterbury is destroyed by an unknown stealth ship. Survivors James Holden, Naomi Nagata, Alex Kamal, and Amos Burton escape in a Martian gunship they rename the Rocinante. Detective Joe Miller investigates the disappearance of Julie Mao, uncovering a conspiracy involving a bio-weapon called the protomolecule. UN Deputy Undersecretary Chrisjen Avasarala works to prevent war between Earth and Mars. The season ends with the protomolecule unleashed on Eros station. Season 1 adapted the first half of Leviathan Wakes, the first novel in the series, and established the show's signature blend of noir detective story and space opera.
Season 2 (2017)
The Rocinante crew allies with the OPA to destroy the protomolecule-infected Eros — but it crash-lands on Venus. Miller sacrifices himself to stop it. Martian Marine Bobbie Draper encounters a protomolecule hybrid on Ganymede. Avasarala works to expose a conspiracy within Earth's government. The protomolecule begins constructing something on Venus. Season 2 adapted the second half of Leviathan Wakes and all of Caliban's War, introducing Bobbie Draper as a major character and expanding the show's political scope.
Season 3 (2018)
The protomolecule forms the Ring — a massive structure beyond Uranus. Ships from Earth, Mars, and the Belt race to investigate. Through Holden, a projection of Miller investigates the Ring's defenses. The season ends with the Ring revealing itself as a network of wormholes to habitable planets — opening the solar system to humanity. This was the season Syfy cancelled, and the season that ended with the most dramatic expansion of the show's universe. According to ScreenRant, Season 3's finale was designed to work as a series ending in case the fan campaign failed — but the Ring opening was also clearly the beginning of a much larger story.
Season 4 (2019)
With habitable worlds accessible through the Ring, the balance of power is disrupted. The Rocinante investigates the planet Ilus, where Holden discovers ancient alien ruins. The crew mediates conflict between colonists and a corporate expedition while dealing with the mysterious alien technology that threatens everyone. Season 4 adapted Cibola Burn and was the first season produced under Amazon. The budget increase was visible in the show's visual effects and production design, which grew significantly more ambitious.
Season 5 (2020–2021)
Belter rebel Marco Inaros attacks Earth with stealth-coated asteroids, causing catastrophic destruction. The Rocinante crew is scattered across the system pursuing personal missions. Naomi confronts her past with Marco and her son Filip. Amos is stranded on Earth. The season sets the stage for war. Season 5 adapted Nemesis Games and featured some of the series' most powerful character work, particularly Naomi's harrowing spacewalk sequence — a 20-minute tour de force that was praised by critics as one of the best episodes of television in 2021.
Season 6 (2021–2022)
The combined fleet of Earth, Mars, and the Belt fights Marco's Free Navy. Drummer leads a Belter rebellion against Marco. The season ends with Marco defeated, the Ring network secure, and a mysterious post-credits scene on a distant planet — setting up storylines from the books that were never adapted. The final season was shorter than previous ones at only six episodes, a decision that showrunner Naren Shankar described as allowing the team to deliver the highest possible quality for the conclusion. According to TV Guide, the post-credits scene — featuring a scientist on an alien world — directly adapts the opening of The Sins of Our Fathers, a novella set after the events of the main series.
Character Guide
James Holden
The captain of the Rocinante, Holden is an idealist thrust into the centre of system-wide conspiracies. He carries the weight of every decision heavily, and his crew's loyalty to him is earned through sacrifice. Holden's arc across six seasons is about the cost of idealism — how many compromises a good person has to make to survive in a system designed to break them. Actor Steven Strait has said in interviews that Holden was deliberately written as a classic hero in a world that doesn't reward heroism.
Naomi Nagata
A Belter engineer, Naomi is the soul of the Rocinante. Her Season 5 arc — confronting Marco Inaros, her abusive ex, and her son Filip — is one of the series' emotional peaks. Dominique Tipper's performance in Season 5 earned widespread critical acclaim, particularly for the episode "Hard Vacuum," in which Naomi performs a nearly impossible spacewalk to escape Marco's ship. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Naomi's arc represents the show's deepest exploration of trauma, survival, and the cost of freedom.
Amos Burton
The Rocinante's mechanic, Amos is a survivor from Baltimore with a violent past and a simple moral code: protect his crew. His arc explores what it means to be human when you've been treated as something less. Wes Chatham's portrayal of Amos became a fan favourite, with the character's deadpan one-liners and unexpected moments of tenderness providing some of the series' most memorable scenes. Amos's backstory — including his childhood in the criminal underground of Baltimore — was explored in more depth in the novella The Churn.
Chrisjen Avasarala
Played by Shohreh Aghdashloo, Avasarala is a UN politician who will burn the galaxy to protect humanity. Her profanity-laced speeches and ruthless pragmatism make her one of television's greatest characters. Aghdashloo's performance earned her a Saturn Award nomination, and Avasarala became the show's breakout character. According to TVLine, the show's writers intentionally expanded Avasarala's role from the books because Aghdashloo's performance was so compelling — a rare example of a TV adaptation improving on its source material through casting.
Camina Drummer
Played by Cara Gee, Drummer is a Belter leader whose arc spans the entire series — from loyal OPA lieutenant to reluctant revolutionary to leader of the Belt. Drummer is a composite character, combining elements of several book characters into a single figure. Gee's performance made Drummer an icon for Belters everywhere, and her character's journey from follower to leader is one of the series' most satisfying arcs.
Bobbie Draper
A Martian Marine with unshakeable principles, Bobbie Draper represents the best of Mars — honour, duty, and the willingness to question orders when they conflict with her values. Frankie Adams brought physical presence and emotional depth to the role, making Bobbie a fan favourite from her first appearance in Season 2.
Why The Expanse Deserved Its Second Chance
Syfy cancelled The Expanse after three seasons due to what was described as a "difficult business decision." The fan campaign was one of the most successful in television history — 100,000 petition signatures, a #SaveTheExpanse banner flown over Amazon Studios, and support from George R.R. Martin, Wil Wheaton, and others. Amazon's pickup allowed the story to reach its planned conclusion — though the books continue past where the show ended, with three more novels set decades later that fans hope might one day be adapted. According to Deadline, the fan campaign succeeded because it provided Amazon with demonstrable data about the show's passionate audience — including viewing numbers from Syfy, social media engagement metrics, and demographic information that made the business case for acquisition. The Expanse is proof that fan campaigns can work when they are organised, data-driven, and targeted at a platform with a strategic reason to say yes.
