The Society: What Season 2 Would Have Been About

Scripts written, sets waiting, then COVID reversed the renewal — the outpost war and the answers New Ham never got.

The Society premiered on Netflix on May 10, 2019, for one season of 10 episodes. Created by Christopher Keyser with Marc Webb, the Lord of the Flies drama strands West Ham teens in New Ham — no adults, severed roads, a solar eclipse with no satellites. According to Variety and Deadline, Netflix renewed the series in July 2019, had scripts for Season 2 fully written by early 2020, then reversed the renewal on August 21, 2020, citing COVID-driven budget and scheduling chaos. Where Season 1 Left Off

Allie Pressman (Kathryn Newton), who assumed leadership after her sister Cassandra's murder and ordered the execution of Greg Dewey, loses power in the finale "How It Happens." Campbell (Toby Wallace), Lexie (Grace Victoria Cox) and Harry (Alex Fitzalan) stage a coup on false vote-rigging charges, arresting Allie and Will (Jacques Colimon) as Grizz's expedition returns shouting they found farmable fields, wildlife and fish. In West Ham, Allie's mother reads beside a memorial wall — confirming New Ham is a parallel Earth. Elle (Olivia DeJonge), forced to spit on Allie, whispers revenge. Becca has just given birth to Eden. Food runs out by next summer. Every power question is open.

The Outpost War — Keyser's Plan

According to Variety, Keyser said Season 2 centred on what the writers called the outpost: the farmable land Grizz found would be settled, then set against the town for control of food. That conflict raised, in his words, large questions about caste systems and an underclass — who labours, who eats, who governs. New relationships would form across the divide while Allie's fate and Campbell's rule decayed into what Keyser called a descent into greater darkness where the rules don't hold. According to Deadline, scripts leaned into war spiralling from accident as much as malice — eerily parallel, Keyser noted, to America's 2020 fractures. Lexie and Harry's co-mayorship, built on no work and no Guard populism plus Campbell's pills and coercion, would have faced the material test of winter.

Politically, Season 2 would have resolved who was in power and who wasn't. Allie jailed, Will beside her, Elle inside Campbell's house as a hostile witness, Kelly holding the Pfeiffer photo and the Eden secret, Sam holding the $1.5M smell-contract proof — every lever for counter-coup was already planted. According to TVLine, Keyser stressed the season would keep the Lord of the Flies model: order fails not once but repeatedly.

The Parallel-Universe Answers

Keyser told Variety the room spent the most time on why West Ham became New Ham — the cause and the way home. Season 1 planted the physics: unscheduled eclipse, shifted Betelgeuse, no satellites, severed tracks, the smell contract refused the day before the buses, driver Pfeiffer's return, the West Sham graffiti, Charlie the dog in both worlds. According to TV Insider, Keyser confirmed Season 2 would have given more answers on the mechanism and return path without collapsing the mystery in episode one. He withheld full details, telling Deadline he hoped to share the continuing story on screen one day — all scripts written, fifteen characters in search of an audience. That restraint is why this article reports structure, not invented mythology.

Why It Never Filmed

Production was to shoot in Devens, Massachusetts, starting March 2020, then shut down with Hollywood. According to Variety, the show was ready for an October restart when Netflix reversed course: a large ensemble, location-heavy summer scripts now facing fall and winter, testing and availability costs layered onto an already ambitious budget. A source told Variety the show was well-liked but uneconomical under protocols. Netflix owns the series, making rescue unlikely. According to Deadline, Keyser called it the hardest goodbye of his career — twice prepped, twice stood down. The scripts remain unproduced.
