Timeless premiered on NBC on October 3, 2016, running for two seasons of 26 episodes plus a two-hour series-finale movie on December 20, 2018. Created by Eric Kripke and Shawn Ryan, the time-travel drama follows historian Lucy Preston, soldier Wyatt Logan and programmer Rufus Carlin chasing terrorist-turned-ally Garcia Flynn through history to stop Rittenhouse, a secret society rewriting America. According to The Hollywood Reporter and TVLine, NBC cancelled the series after Season 1 in 2017 then reversed within days after fan outcry, cancelled again after Season 2, then ordered the movie to close the story.

Season 1 (2016-2017) — The Mothership and the Journal

Flynn (Goran Visnjic) steals the Mothership time machine, murdering its inventor's team. The Department of Homeland Security recruits Lucy (Abigail Spencer), Wyatt (Matt Lanter) and Rufus (Malcolm Barrett) under Agent Denise Christopher (Sakina Jaffrey) and inventor Connor Mason (Paterson Joseph) to chase him in the Lifeboat prototype. Early missions — Hindenburg, Lincoln assassination, Alamo — establish rules: the team cannot change the present too much, Rittenhouse plants sleepers across centuries, and Lucy carries a journal Flynn claims she wrote. Lucy learns her sister Amy was erased when her mother married a Rittenhouse man; Wyatt learns his murdered wife Jessica may be restorable; Rufus, the only Black pilot trusted with the machine, records everything for Rittenhouse under duress. According to Entertainment Weekly, Kripke insisted the journal loop to São Paulo 2014 be paid off eventually — a promise the finale keeps. Season 1 ends with the Mothership destroyed, Rittenhouse exposed inside Mason Industries, and Flynn in custody claiming Lucy is the key.

Season 2 (2018) — Rittenhouse War and Rufus Dies

Season 2 opens with Wyatt's wife Jessica (Tonya Glanz) back from the dead as a Rittenhouse agent, fracturing the Lucy-Wyatt bond. Jiya (Claudia Doumit), Rufus's girlfriend, develops precognitive visions from time-travel side effects. Missions pivot to unsung history — Harriet Tubman and the Civil War, Hollywood's Hedy Lamarr, the Salem witch trials reframed — as the show, according to The Hollywood Reporter, deliberately centred women and people of colour pushed to history's margins. Carol (Susanna Thompson), Lucy's mother revealed as Rittenhouse, tempts Lucy to lead the organisation. Emma (Annie Wersching), Rittenhouse's pilot, escalates. In the two-hour Season 2 finale, Jiya foresees Rufus dying in 1880s Chinatown; the team prevents one death only for Emma to shoot Rufus moments later. The final shock — an upgraded Lifeboat arrives carrying future Lucy and Wyatt ordering the team to save Rufus — was, according to showrunner Shawn Ryan, the most hardcore sci-fi swing the network show ever attempted.

Character Guide

Lucy Preston

Abigail Spencer plays the historian forced to weaponise her expertise. Lucy's arc is principle versus loss: she will not let Rittenhouse — or herself — rewrite grief, even to restore her sister Amy. Her decision in the finale to let Amy stay erased, according to Ryan, makes her the show's true heroine rather than a sidekick.

Wyatt Logan

Matt Lanter plays the soldier choosing between two wrongs — dead wife returned versus new love earned. Season 2 forces him to admit his feelings without erasing what Jessica's return cost Lucy. Fathers twins Flynn and Amy by 2023.

Rufus Carlin and Jiya

Malcolm Barrett's Rufus is the moral recorder — funny, devout, terrified and brave — whose death the entire finale is built to undo. Claudia Doumit's Jiya evolves from support to seer to scientist, founding the RIYA foundation with Rufus by 2023. According to TVLine, saving Rufus was non-negotiable for the fanbase.

Garcia Flynn, Emma and Rittenhouse

Goran Visnjic turns Flynn from terrorist to tragic hero — a man who lost wife and daughter, read Lucy's journal, and learns to die selflessly. Annie Wersching's Emma is the true believer who kills even her own leaders. Rittenhouse, via Carol and Nicholas, embodies generational control. Agent Christopher and Connor anchor the present-day cost.

The Finale Movie — Christmas 2018

NBC boss Bob Greenblatt asked for Christmas theme, so Ryan, Kripke, Arika Mittman and Lauren Greer built two histories: 1848 California gold rush with Joaquin Murrieta mirroring Flynn, and the 1950 Hungnam evacuation — dubbed the Miracle at Christmas — where the team delivers a pregnant Korean woman to safety. According to The Hollywood Reporter and Entertainment Weekly, Flynn sneaks to kill Jessica on the fateful night, suffering timeline sickness, restores Rufus, glimpses his own happy family, then dies. Emma is shot as Chinese forces arrive; both time ships return. Flash-forward to 2023: Lucy tenured, teaching women's history, married to Wyatt with twins; Rufus and Jiya together; Mothership destroyed, Lifeboat kept. The team closes the loop in 2014 São Paulo where Lucy gives Flynn her journal — you are maybe the greatest hero of us all. A final coda shows young Paulina sketching a time machine, a crack left open. According to EW, Ryan compares any future to Star Trek — killed twice, back twice, never say never.

Why Was Timeless Cancelled?

Linear ratings never matched passion. According to The Hollywood Reporter, NBC cited low same-day numbers despite vocal fandom, Sony co-production economics and scheduling. The 2017 reversal came days after cancellation; the 2018 movie came after a cliffhanger that demanded resolution. The finale's feminist coda — Lucy tenured, Jiya a famous scientist, an unknown Korean mother as the important historical figure — was, per Ryan, intentional: history belongs to everyone, not just Lincolns and Kennedys.
