Season 1

Sheila Hammond (Drew Barrymore), a real estate agent in Santa Clarita, dies suddenly and resurrects as a zombie. She retains her personality but loses her gag reflex and develops an insatiable craving for human flesh — which gives her superhuman strength, energy, and a dramatically improved mood. Her husband Joel (Timothy Olyphant), a mild-mannered real estate agent, is horrified but devoted, and together they navigate the complications of keeping Sheila's condition secret.

The season follows the Hammonds as they kill people — usually bad people, justifying it as necessary — and dispose of the bodies. Their neighbour Eric and daughter Abby eventually learn the truth and help cover it up. Meanwhile, a police investigation into the disappearances inches closer, and Sheila's real estate colleague Gary develops an obsession with her. The season ends with Sheriff's Deputy Anne uncovering crucial evidence about the disappearances.

Season 2

Season 2 expands the mythology. Sheila and Joel learn there are other zombies (or "undead" as they prefer), and that the condition may be linked to a centuries-old Serbian "heartworm" serpent that crawls into people's mouths. Joel becomes more desperate to find a cure, while Sheila embraces her new existence — she's happier, healthier, and more confident than she ever was alive.

The season introduces Mr. Ball Legs, a bizarre sentient parasite that emerges from a victim's body and provides cryptic guidance. Joel investigates the source of the zombie condition, leading him to a cult-like compound where followers eat raw meat waiting for transcendence. The season ends with Joel being kidnapped by the cult, and Sheila going on a rampage to rescue him.

Season 3

Season 3 deepens the mythology while maintaining the show's signature blend of gore and comedy. Joel is rescued but traumatised. Sheila's condition evolves — she can now control her urges better, but the side effects are becoming more unpredictable. The cult storyline escalates, leading to a confrontation with the leader.

The season builds to a climax where Joel — who has spent three seasons caring for Sheila — is shot by a rival undead hunter and killed. In the final moments, Sheila is cradling his body when Joel's eyes snap open. He is undead. The show was setting up a complete role reversal for Season 4: Joel as the zombie, Sheila as the caretaker. We'll never see it.

Character Guide

Sheila Hammond

Drew Barrymore plays Sheila with infectious energy. As a zombie, she gains confidence, loses inhibition, and becomes the most fully alive version of herself. Her character arc is about embracing who she really is — even if who she really is requires eating people. By the end, she has accepted her condition and become the protector of her family.

Joel Hammond

Timothy Olyphant gives a masterclass in physical comedy. Joel is a nervous, detail-oriented everyman who loves his wife enough to help her dispose of bodies. His arc is about the limits of devotion — how much can one person sacrifice for love? The Season 3 finale suggests his answer is "everything."

Abby Hammond

Abby is the Hammonds' teenage daughter. She discovers her mother's secret in Season 1 and handles it with surprising maturity — while still being a typical teenager navigating romance and high school. Her relationship with Eric, the neighbour boy, provides some of the show's most charming moments.

Eric Bemis

The Hammonds' neighbour and one of the show's best characters. Eric is a sweet, awkward teenager who discovers the secret and becomes an unlikely confidant. He provides research, moral support, and comic relief in equal measure.

What Was Planned for Season 4?

Creator Victor Fresco confirmed that Season 4 would have explored a complete role reversal: Joel as the zombie, struggling to adjust to his new condition, while Sheila would have to care for him the way he cared for her. The show would have continued exploring the mythology of the Serbian heartworms, the cult, and the broader history of the undead. None of it was produced.

Why Was Santa Clarita Diet Cancelled?

Netflix cancelled the show on April 26, 2019 — after three seasons. The official reason was never stated, but the show had a dedicated but niche audience. It was critically well-received (83% on Rotten Tomatoes) but never broke into Netflix's mainstream top-tier viewership. The cancellation was particularly frustrating because news of the renewal was reportedly under discussion when the decision was made to cancel instead.
