The Wound in the King

Snow falls on Os Alta three weeks after the coronation bloodbath. It does not stick. It melts where it touches the cathedral steps, where jurda parem still stains the stone black.

Nikolai Lantsov stands before the mirror in his private chambers and unbuttons his shirt. The wound has grown. What was a puncture from a nichevo'ya talon is now a branching map of veins, black to the elbow, pulsing faintly when he breathes. He smiles at it in the glass, the privateer's grin he wore as Sturmhond.

"You are not getting the throne," he tells the darkness. "You are getting a cage."

Tolya knocks. Zoya enters without waiting. She is Surge now, leader of the Second Army after Alina abolished the kefta colours. She does not flinch at the arm.

"Alina is ready," Zoya says.

The Small Science

The workshop beneath the Little Palace smells of charcoal and pine resin. David Kostyk has rebuilt Baghra's old room into a laboratory. Diagrams of amplifiers cover the walls — stag, sea whip, firebird — all crossed out. A fourth diagram hangs empty.

Alina Starkov waits by the window. She wears grey, no kefta, no gold. Since the Fold fell she cannot summon sunlight. When she reaches for power, shadow answers instead, cold and obedient. She hates how easy it feels.

Mal Oretsev sharpens a knife he does not need. He died in the Fold and came back wrong in the way all merzost-touched things come back wrong — his tracker senses dulled, his sleep full of wingbeats. He lives, but the bond between them hums at a different pitch now.

"Say it," Alina says.

David clears his throat. "Morozova created the amplifiers by splitting his own power. You reversed it when you killed Mal —" He stops. "When Mal died and returned. The light dispersed. Thousands felt it. That is why the Fold collapsed."

"And my shadow?" Alina asks.

"Merzost is exchange. You took a life back. Something filled the hollow." Genya, scarred and unhidden now, takes her hand. "Kirigan's power had to go somewhere."

Mal sets the knife down. "Then we give it somewhere to go."

The Transfer

Nikolai removes his coat. He sits in a circle of chalk and crushed charcoal, the old Grisha wards Baghra taught Zoya before she died. Zoya stands north. Alina stands south. Tolya and Tamar hold the line east and west.

"In the books of the Saints this never worked," Nikolai jokes. "But our story has always outgrown the books."

No one laughs, but the tension breaks enough to breathe.

Alina places her palm over his wound. Shadow rises to meet shadow, eager. For a moment she sees Kirigan — not cruel, just tired, a boy who made a Fold to protect his people and spent four hundred years justifying it. She does not forgive him. She lets him go.

"Mal," she whispers. "Anchor me."

Mal grips her shoulder. He is otkazat'sya now, powerless, and that is his power — he is the one thing in the room merzost cannot use. His touch is warm and ordinary and human. Alina pulls the darkness out of Nikolai thread by thread, the way Genya once pulled poison from a wound, and pours it into herself.

Nikolai screams. The black veins retreat from his arm, up to his shoulder, to his chest, to a single coin-sized mark over his heart. It stops. It scars.

Alina staggers. Her eyes are black from edge to edge. Then Mal pulls her back, and the black recedes, leaving grey.

"It will return," Zoya says quietly. "Demoncraft does not vanish."

"No," Alina says. "But now it has two keepers instead of one."

No Mourners, No Funerals

Spring comes to Ketterdam six months later. The Barrel is quieter under Kaz Brekker's rule — not kinder, but ordered. Inej Ghafa's ship leaves for the slavers' coast at dawn. Jesper and Wylan argue over explosives on the dock while Nina smuggles Matthias's pardon papers in a pie.

A letter arrives from Ravka, sealed in grey wax. Kaz reads it aloud: the Second Army disbanded by colour, Grisha taught alongside otkazat'sya medics, a university rising where the Little Palace stood. King Nikolai the Scarred. Saint Alina the Shadow-Bearer, who walks the villages with her tracker husband, drawing sickness and shadow out of the sick and into herself, then releasing it into the sky as harmless grey moths.

Inej smiles. "She found a use for it."

Kaz pockets the letter. "No mourners," he says.

"No funerals," they answer.

Far east, on a road outside Keramzin, Alina and Mal pass the orphanage where they grew up. Children chase each other through the yard. No one bows. No one prays. Alina feels the small weight of shadow behind her ribs, quiet for once, and Mal's hand warm in hers.

The Fold is gone. The saints are silent. The world is ordinary, and it is enough.

This is not an official ending. It is a fan-written imagining of how Shadow and Bone could have concluded.
